This special issue is aimed at recent progress in the equatorial plasma bubble and ionospheric scintillation research, and seeks to provide a state-of-the-art perspective on how to improve the forecast ability of ionospheric irregularities producing scintillations through the development of new observations and models.

Topics to be discussed in this special issue include the following:

· The coupling processes in the atmosphere-ionosphere and ionosphere- magnetosphere systems that affect the seeding and development of equatorial plasma bubbles.

· The current status, challenges and future directions in plasma bubble and ionospheric scintillation forecasting.

· The techniques for remote sensing of the ionosphere such as coherent and incoherent scatter radars, coordinated campaigns to investigate the variability of low latitude ionosphere using multiple instruments, and plasma bubble model simulations.

· Novel optical and radio measurements of plasma bubbles, such as airglow imaging observations from satellites and ground, and total electron content and scintillation observations using beacon radio waves transmitted from low-earth orbits. Study of 3D tomography of plasma density is also welcome.

· The social impacts of ionospheric scintillation, and the mitigation of scintillation effects on space-based high technology.

· Special issue call for paper: October 1st 2019.

· Submission deadline: January 31th 2020.

· Special issue completed: May 15th 2021.

Your paper will appear online as soon as it is accepted. All accepted papers of special issue will be published in the third issue of 2021.

EPP is an open access journal. EPP’s electronic version is hosted online by the AGU with Wiley. All submitted manuscripts are subject to peer-review before being considered for publication.
